In Kindergarten, we want to begin to grow and foster a love of reading. A listening center will help my students learn in both a visual and auditory way and also help develop their comprehension and writing skills.
I hope to provide a small area in my classroom with a table and stools for 4 to 6 students that will hold a cd/cassette player with headphones and various books on cd or cassette.
When a student comes to the listening station he or she will listen to a story while tracking the words in a book. Once finished, the student will then be able to respond to the story using either words, pictures or a combination of both depending on the student's learning style and needs. The student can then come and have a “book club chat” with me so that I can ask the student comprehension and opinion questions about what was just read. In using all these steps, I am setting my young scholars up to become strong, successful readers.
