Movement activates learning! Over the last several years I have observed the power of students who are actively engaged in their learning. First grade is filled with opportunities for students to interact with one another through turn and talks, peer teaching, whole brain vocabulary and actively moving. Yoga balls with the frisbee base to keep them in place will allow students to quickly turn to one another, swivel in their seats to watch the teacher, increase core muscles and allow students controlled movement and breaks. I have been pleasantly surprised by my students ability to be playful with a great sense of responsibility. They develop the power of self-control and personal responsibility throughout the year. Alternative seating would add a unique physical dimension to our classroom that I believe increase learning.
