My students live in the inner city. Poverty is a fact of life for them. Most are African-American or Hispanic, and they qualify for free text book rental and free lunch. Many of our parents work multiple minimum wage jobs just to try and make ends meet. My students have very few opportunities to take advantage of the educational and cultural activities offered in our city (outside of school) due to financial constraints and parent work schedules. In spite of these disadvantages, my students are bright, curious, and eager to learn. I am fortunate to be teaching them, and even more fortunate that through music I can expose them to so many cultures and histories. Since my students love to drum, I use drumming to teach musical literacy, and to maintain focus and interest in the activities we do.
