Art integration will enhance student engagement and promote learning. It allows students to be problem solvers and gives them opportunities to demonstrate what they learned and know. Having art integrated lessons allows teachers to assess students without the usual paper and pencil test or worksheets. We recently read about Christopher Columbus’ voyage and my students painted the three ships (Sta. Maria, Pinta, and Nina) as they arrive in America. My students were able to illustrate the text they read and were able to use their paintings to talk about Columbus’ voyage. The art integrated lesson helped them understand and remember historical events.
I also use art to enhance our math class. My students learned about cubes and drawing real world three dimensional cube objects. Our class needs our own set of different size paint brushes so we can do artwork anytime. We currently just borrow from another teacher when we paint. I have some good art integrated lesson with different types of media, the oil pastel sets is another art media I’m hoping my students can learn how to use. Art supplies like the camel hair brushes and pastel paints are expensive and I don’t want to financially burden my students’ parents by asking my kids to bring their own supplies. Hopefully we receive the art supplies we need so we can start learning and creating awesome artwork!
