Exposure to violent crime is common for students growing up in poverty. There are students at my school whose only meals are the breakfast and lunch they eat at school. Many students at my school are growing up in a single-parent home or are being raised by a relative. Some students live with a foster family.
There is a lot of transition in the student population at my school. Students move from school to school within and outside the district. Being homeless is also a reality for some of my students.
Additionally, my school serves students whose families are stationed at the local military base. Students from military families have to deal with one or even both parents being deployed and away from the family for extended periods of time.
