I am asking for 4 Kindles for students to be able to listen to stories through the use of QR codes and online resources. My students participate daily in literacy stations along with guided reading groups. These stations include Work on Writing, Word Work, Read to Self, Technology, and Listen to Reading. Each station serves a specific purpose.
Listening to stories gives students the opportunity to listen to their favorite stories over and over. They are able to hear fluent reading while hearing it with fun sound effects and in different voices. It also provides students with a love for reading and discover stories are adventures waiting to be experienced!
Listening to reading helps children learn grammar and word mastery skills. These helps form the basis for learning how to read. Second grade is an important year for students to continue to learn how to read and also move toward comprehension strategies/skills to better understand what they are reading. Students need to continue to "hear" more complicated language, as picture books contain a lot of vocabulary and language usage not in ordinary, daily conversations. Teaching critical skills, introducing new genres, decoding unfamiliar words, and introducing students to books above their reading levels are among additional benefits students receive when listening to stories.
We are living in the age of 21st Century learners. Technology has become an integral part of how these students learn and reach instructional goals. The Kindle Fires will provide the technological component to reach Common Core Standards objectives.
