I work at a Title 1 school, where the majority of the students come from low-income homes, and 50% of their parents work in migrant agriculture. My students are an amazing group of Dual Immersion students, whose primary language is Spanish. They have a great desire for learning and are highly motivated. We have been working with Inquiry-Project Based learning and have developed the insatiable love for learning. Although they face many challenges given their background, they work hard to achieve excellence and have all developed excellent work ethics. These students have extended the learning and brought projects to life.
My primary vision is to have every student experience what it is to be an engineer with the building and designing process. The materials that I am requesting are for 45 students; 15 groups of 3 students each. For previous projects, I have had students use various supplies to work on their projects. However, they were messy and at times dangerous. My wish is for my students to use their own creativity by building their future planet using Legos. My students are currently in the planning process of creating their planet, and they are in great need of egos to complete their project. Each unit topic builds on knowledge gained during the prior unit. For example, 6th-grade students are researching innovating agriculture tools for their “Future Planet.” As soon as students develop depth and knowledge, they will move onto their blueprints for their planet. They will need to represent their “Future Planet” using Legos. Students will use their knowledge of our ancient civilizations learned throughout the school year, and the units in our Social Justice theme that was cover throughout the school year. Finally, the students will present their final projects to their colleagues and community members.
