Girls in low income families miss school when it is that time of the month because they can't afford sanitary pads. As a middle school nurse, I work with girls between the ages of 11-15 with many of these girls coming from very low income families and don't have the money to purchase feminine products. I have made many home visits to check on students only to find out the missed school because the don't have sanitary pads, soap, shampoo or deodorant and were too embarrassed to come to school and ask for help.
My goal is to provide each girl in my school feminine hygiene products when and before they need it, so they can attend school.
Many girls at this age are just learning about how to take care of themselves. I want to be able to have kits for them that contain soap, shampoo, pads, deodorant and an extra pair of underwear for when they do have accidents, they don't have to go home. Or if they are out of these items, they can come to me and get the products they need to be able to attend school without it affecting their education.
