April is National Poetry Month during which my 6th graders read and write poetry. Having verse novels to read during the unit will complement their learning as they identify poetry elements within a different genre. Verse novels have less words on the page for reluctant readers and are also complex emotional stories appealing to avid readers. Because verse novels are accessible by all reading levels, all students will achieve reading success as they are exposed to a diverse, multicultural, historical selection of novels in verse.
Easy to pick up and hard to put down, verse novels are the perfect "hook book" for both reluctant and advanced readers.
