How do you feel after sitting in the same spot for a couple of hours? Pretty antsy, right? As adults, we enjoy getting up and moving around, but as children, I strongly believe the need for movement is even greater. If you walked into my classroom, you would find 22 student desks and one U-shaped table that is used primarily for small-group instruction. Although my students start the day at their desks, it doesn’t take long for them to ask to move to a different location. Why is this? I believe it is because children do not learn best sitting in the same spot on a day-to-day basis. They enjoy moving around and choosing where to work based on the activity they are doing.
I believe my job as a teacher extends further than simply teaching the curriculum; it involves instilling a fire for learning that burns long after they leave my classroom. If I demand that students always work at their desks, I believe I will stifle their creativity and lessen their love for learning. The materials that I have chosen in this project will provide my students with comfortable, effective work spaces. The floor table can be used for group work or independent learning, the balance balls will be perfect for my high-energy students, and the carpet will be a wonderful location for independent reading. By donating to this project, you will help to provide my students with a more inviting classroom. I am confident that giving students these options will lead to even greater success in my classroom!
