There are several reasons why my students would benefit from having laptops in class. My students need computers to take reading tests. Our low performing students have to take weekly exams to monitor progress. We use this data to assign students to intervention groups to improve reading scores and even test students for special education. Currently, I am having to send students to other classes to test because my classroom computers are outdated and will not allow students to test properly. I do not receive enough state classrooms funds to buy new computers.
Many of our students' families cannot afford any technology at home. We have a reading program in which students read as many books as they want and take comprehension quizzes on them. They use the points to get rewards every 9 weeks. Students who do not have computers at home can only take reading quizzes at school and miss out on the rewards.
Students at our school are required to do Classworks. This program is used for enrichment and review. Students do computer lessons and games in reading, language arts, math, and science in this program. With laptops, students would be able to get on this program more in our classroom. It could even be used as a reward for good behavior and enrichment for those students who need challenged.
