My students attend a Title 1 school in an impoverished neighborhood with a very diverse population. Many of my students come from second language homes, and are learning English in addition to the kindergarten curriculum. Though all of the neighboring schools have full-day kindergarten, due to the recent budget crisis we continue to remain a half day program. This is why it is so critical for my students to be provided with the materials required to extend their learning at home. I assign nightly reading, but many of my students' parents tell me the do not have books to read at home.
