The students at Reach Academy have diverse abilities and disabilities and learn differently than typical students. As we may be able to regulate our senses in various environments, our students encounter a struggle on a daily basis. They may report that the lights are too bright, or not bright enough, the environment is too loud or they are unable to hear, the teacher's perfume is too strong, etc. All of the students are different and have specific needs. We as staff try to meet the students where they are and try to create a comfortable place for the students to learn and be successful.
I know that the hearing protector headphones will assist some of our students who are unable to tolerate the various and many sounds they encounter throughout their school day. I firmly believe that items such as the Under the Sea Projector and the blue light filters will create a calming environment for the students and assist them to regulate themselves. I am trying to create a sensory-friendly room in our school building where the students can come to regulate their senses so that they can go back into the classroom to access their education. The items in the cart will be used to calm the students senses if that is what is needed at that moment or heighten their senses if that is what their nervous system is requesting at that moment.
