A sensory room is a therapeutic space with a variety of equipment that provides students with special needs, personalized sensory input. This helps those students calm and focus themselves so they can be better prepared for learning and interacting with others. Each of my students has an Individualized Learning Plan (IEP) with one or more social/emotional goals. The goal of this project is to create a sensory room to meet the wide variety of needs of my students, as well as help them to meet their social/emotional IEP goals.
When a student has their sensory needs met, they are better able to focus and follow directions which in turn, means there is a decrease in their negative behaviors. The products that I have selected will help my students learn to meet their individual sensory needs. The products selected meet proprioception needs, the awareness of where your body is in space, the vestibular system needs, the sense of balance, as well as visual, tactile and auditory needs.
I have seen how having their sensory needs met has positively affected my students and I know that building a complete multi-sensory room will help them find success in middle school.
