This project includes a variety of materials to help students engage with learning.
Half of the materials are books with diverse characters and subject matter that appeal to my students. Every quarter, students complete an independent reading project, where they choose a book at their independent reading level to read and analyze independently. I have been impressed with the growth and engagement I've seen through these projects. When students are able to pick books they relate to and can read successfully, I see more engagement with the text. Some of them told me this year that they have never read a book independently! Imagine the success they feel when they experience joy while reading for the first time. I'm requesting copies of Dear Martin, Kanye West, Ghost Boys, The Hate U Give, Drake: Actor and Rapper, and the Night Fall series.
The other half of the project are building materials and games to encourage STEAM learning, such as LEGO Chain Reactions kits and a Snap Circuits Electronics Discovery Kit that we can use for science explorations. Every Friday we do experiments in science classes. Additionally, students take a social skills class every day where we often use games to practice real-world skills. These materials will provide opportunities for hands-on engagement and inquiry learning. Other requested activities include Jenga and Think Twice In a Jar. These materials will also be available for free time as choice items.
My students do best when they are in charge of their own learning and these materials will provide opportunities to engage and explore in a variety of ways. I am excited to see how these materials will enrich our learning experience!
