I have been utilizing flexible seating for 2 years in my classroom. Spending out of my own pocket, I have added 1 new element each school year. The flexible seating option allows students to use autonomy in choosing how they learn best. Students can lay down on a carpet mat, wobble on a hoki stool, rock on a glider chair, sit alone in a scoop rocker, bounce on a stability chair, or sit upright on a floor cushion. For many 5 and 6 year olds, they need movement to effectively access new information. While utilizing flex seating while they complete independent learning, they are more focused and attention span is highly improved. Thus, the implementation of flex seating will increase student performance, as evidenced by my small scale introduction.
