Students have a huge job in kindergarten, learning how to read! My classroom has an abundance of resources to teach students phonics and phonemic awareness. What my students need now is high quality, rich text that can integrate science and social studies through read alouds and shared reading.
I can see the excitement for reading growing when students listen to stories that enrich their language and take them on a journey to another place and time. Currently those resources are limited. As I begin to develop ways to integrate science and social studies into reading instruction I'm finding I have a lack of books to develop science and social studies concepts and vocabulary. The development of content vocabulary and concepts is essential for reading success in upper grade levels. By exposing my kindergarteners to content rich vocabulary and concepts I am laying the foundation for future success when they become readers who are reading to learn.
