Have you ever had to sit in a meeting or class at the traditional tables or desks for an extended period of time? Wouldn't you have much rather been able to move around and choose where you would like to sit?
Well, just like most of us, my 2nd grade students do not like to sit in one place for long. They need to be able to move around and change their seating arrangement daily. Choice gives students a chance to get out from behind their desk and find another location in the room that will allow them to stay focused and learn. The reading pillows, Hokki stools, backpatter seats and carpet will help provide these environments. They will be used during stations and group work as well as independent work. My hope is that the students will be more on-task and this will lead to a deeper understanding of the material being taught. Also, the items for this project will hopefully be an incentive to increase the quality of work and decrease behavior problems in the classroom. Who wouldn't want to be the first to pick their seat?
