My students love to read! Especially when the books that we read are relatable and can help us generate classroom discussion. What I hope to achieve with these two new books, Dear Martin and I am not your Perfect Mexican Daughter is a safe environment for students to think critically about the world they live in today.
Post-secondary data continues to demonstrate that far too many African-American and Latino students finish high school as functional illiterates—that is, they cannot read and write at a basic level requisite. My goal as a 9th-grade teacher is to emphasize the importance of reading and writing for their present and future goals in life. We are the Doctors, Lawyers, and Teachers of tomorrow and I want to send them into the world believing in their abilities; that begins with reading and writing.
Our students deserve to have good books. As of right now, the ones we do have are in no condition to pass out to students. We have pages that are falling out and if you are lucky enough, you can have a book that has pages that are hanging literally by a thread.
Help us start next year off with books that help us build our future!
