In this project, students will work collaboratively to defy gravity and build bridges which are not only functional but aesthetically pleasing. After researching various types of bridges that are constructed throughout the world, students will utilize craft sticks, tape and hot glue to create a bridge which will hold mass. They will create a more pleasing style with added decoration using Wikki Sticks.
As students work together, they not only learn about the scientific principle of gravity and increase their engineering capabilities, they discover that they have built bridges of communication and talent discovery with one another. During creation, students will wear gloves in order to protect themselves from the heat of the glue guns, thus, simulating a true work environment. Once construction is completed, students will use the scale and weights to determine how much mass their bridge will hold, increasing their mathematical skills.
As a result of this project, students will be better enabled to work collaboratively throughout the year because they have learned to communicate effectively and capitalize on each other's gifts and talents. Not only will structures be completed for testing and display, but our class will be built on good functional principles for optimal learning throughout the school year.
