Our students face challenges every day. Not just challenges in the classroom, but in their homes and neighborhoods. They view school as a safe haven, a place where there is consistency and routine. However, we have struggled to provide that consistency and routine in our mathematics classrooms. We share a small number of calculators throughout our middle and high schools. Students, and teachers, are never guaranteed to have calculators at their disposal for lessons.
Where we see the largest impact is standardized testing. Tests such as the Keystone, Pennsylvania's state-required standardized test, and the SAT are difficult tests that a require a calculator for optimal success. Other schools require their students to purchase these calculators on their own. Unfortunately, many of our students do not have the financial means to make this purchase. We have become the supplier for our students. Anywhere from 50 to 150 calculators may be needed at one time for testing. An influx of calculators would guarantee that our students have functional scientific calculators that will give them the opportunity to score their best on these tests.
