Most of our students have not had the opportunities to explore the world of science, especially at their pace. They are often the ones in the back who do not engage in the hands on activities, or have the courage to ask the questions they have; sometimes they completely miss science to get intervention in reading and math. We want to provide our students with the opportunity to explore the world of rocks and "do" science. A few years ago, I went to a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) class, where I received a rock kit. That was the inspiration for this project. In this project our students will learn about the rock cycle. We will do an experiment to learn about the rock cycle and the three types of rocks: Igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. We will make geodes in eggshells and break real geodes with real rock hammers. Reading accompanies everything we do and the books we want to order will get the students excited about the project as well as give them some background information. Being from a Title 1 school, many of our students have not had the experiences that most of us would think of as normal. These would include going to a zoo, museum, or even a movie theatre. Our program is an intervention program, so we don't have the materials or funding to do these hands on activities without some extra help.
