My students are mainly sophomores in high school, however, I do have freshman, juniors, and seniors at times. The school I work at is located in central Florida. It houses a fabulous NJROTC program. There are students that come to school with nothing at times. As any teacher would do, I try my best to have what they need, and if not locate another person on campus that would be able to help them out. There is, unfortuantely, a great number of my students who lack support from home in regards to their academic studies. Mathematics by far is a subject I hear more than often than not, "My parents tell me I don't need to know any of this for life after high school," and then this gives license to the student to do poorly and not make their best effort. I want to change this thinking and show students mathematics is more than just numbers on a page.
