We need wobble chairs, lap desks, floor seats and bean bags for flexible seating that allows students to take charge of their learning and make choices that work best for them. So much of our work in the classroom today requires students to work collaboratively with their peers to complete assignments. Pulling up a beanbag chair next to your partner to share ideas and work is so much more engaging than sitting next to someone in a desk. Sitting on a wobble stool allows a busy child to focus on the work and not the need to move!
The choice of seating is about more than just a fun place to sit; it is about trusting students to know themselves, and finding the place where they will work best.
These small changes tilt the traditional thinking of an elementary school setting. Students are given a voice and choice in how they approach learning on a daily basis which will build confidence. As they mature, they will build upon the opportunities afforded in this classroom setting, and continue to make smart choices.
