In the NGSS Cohort course I took over the summer, I witnessed the value of hands on science experiments. This school year my students have blossomed as true scientist. By using experiments as a tool, students are able to communicate using scientific talk, collect data, and create visual representations that help them understand the concept being taught.
I want to continue to spark their interests and fortify their learning using this hands on teaching model.
To complete my Light and Sound Unit, I need more read aloud books to build background knowledge that they will need to complete the experiments. For the experiments, I need tuning forks, kazoos, glowsticks, mirrors, lasers, rulers, and flashlights. These are the foundations to learning by doing.
To complete my Phases of the Moon Unit, I need a model to really show the students how the Earth, Moon, and Sun interact with each other. I also need more read aloud books to help them understand this far from Earth concept.
For my Engineering Unit, I need STEM toys that allow them to build working models so they can see how different items work together. This will also allow them to work through the Engineer Design Model firsthand.
Finally I need read aloud books to support our units on Plant Shapes and Animal Sounds.
With these materials, I will be able to do all the lessons I have compiled to create young and motivated scientists.
