Getting through "To Kill a Mockingbird" this year was a challenge. While the themes of injustice and taking a stand are universal, it was difficult for my kids to connect to the text at first.
We spoke a lot about fairness, equity, and privilege. We made lists of things we think are worth standing up for. We spoke regularly about current events.
Receiving a class set of "The Hate U Give" will provide scholars with an opportunity to not only make connections between classic and contemporary texts, but also to see themselves reflected in a novel. Too often our kids are not seeing themselves in books- I'd like to change that narrative.
