My wonderful students are deaf and attend an urban school in Illinois. Many of my students are not only deaf, but they have other disabilities as well. They range in grades from 4th to 8th grade. Most come from low-income families and struggle on a daily basis academically. Most of their families struggle to learn sign language so most of their vocabulary acquisition and expressive and receptive language is are learned during school hours. Academically, most are several years behind in school, but constantly try their best and work as hard as they can to be successful.
