Fifth graders in my classroom are offered voice and choice in a variety of different ways. As they grow, they will find that they do have countless important decisions to make. It's up to them to decide how they tackle those decisions, and it's important they understand that there is rarely only one "right way". It's important that we start promoting this problem solving and decision-making in the classroom.
Providing flexible seating(tables, bean bags, balance balls, chair bands, etc) and allowing students to explore how they learn best will help them make decisions that will positively impact themselves as individuals. Although some students thrive sitting at a desk, others find it very difficult. Giving students the choice in seating helps them realize that learning happens everywhere and it happens all the time: not just when you're sitting at a desk facing the front of the classroom.
