The goal for this project is to create a fluid, familial and intuitive weekly student drum circle during our weekly Wednesday morning club time.
I would like to be able to improve our current situation by providing real instruments beyond the make-shift buckets they are currently using.
Research indicates that drumming has the following benefits: Strengthens the immune system (Dr. Bittman), releases trauma and negativity, and promotes meditative states. It also improves learning by increasing synchronicity of the brain hemispheres. A Stanford study of 20 middle school boys found that drumming improved attention and IQ. Not only does it improve connection to the self and others, it is fun!
I am requesting a variety of drums so that the students can experience the various tones, styles, textured sounds, and vibrations of drums/drum surfaces. It will be a multi-sensory experience designed to create community, with the goal of informal school-based performances.
This project will be combined with a separate facilitator-training grant proposal for training though a local music school that specializes in drumming facilitation (Bongo Boy Music School) or the Remo Healthrhythms Training (pending funding.)
