I am a first year teacher. That should say it all. I have a classroom full of students ready to learn, but we are missing vital aids. BOOKS!!! Imagine coming into high school and a teacher asking you to read and you can hardly say the first word on the page. This is how it is for many of my students. I am responding to this issue by finding books that will interest my students and also help them build on the five pillars of reading; fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, phonemic awareness, and phonic and concepts of print.
My students are low level, low functioning students, but they are so ready to learn. The economy is extremely low in the school's area and it is hard to find the means to make things happen. OUr high school has only about 200 students, so you can imagine that everyone knows everyone around here. Many of my students spend most of their happiest moments at school, and regret the moments that they spend at home.
