One of the joys of childhood is riding a bike. Riding with a friend is twice the fun! Having tandem tricycles on our kindergarten playground will allow my students to ride in a safe environment- something many do not get to do at home.
What better way to learn social skills, develop gross motor skills, and encourage language development than while riding a tandem tricycle! The importance of outdoor play on brain development is well-documented. Providing kindergarteners with tricycles enables the children to learn cooperation, interaction skills, and an understanding of force and motion- one of our kindergarten science standards.
The feel of the wind in your hair and a friend with you on a bike is priceless! I believe the experience of riding the tricycles can translate into a lifelong love of being active outdoors and put the kids on a path to living healthy into adulthood. Figuring out how to negotiate the playground with a classmate on a tricycle builds problem-solving and negotiation skills as well. Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of a bike ride!
