This is my second year being the Technology Teacher at our Elementary School. Traditionally, this role was described as Computer Teacher because our Lab consists of rows of PCs. The curriculum focused on skills to use a computer. I have been building a program to turn our Computer Lab into a Technology Lab where students cultivate learning through experiences and their own innovations while learning computer skills. I also am trying to encourage more STEM in classrooms throughout our school by making the Tech Lab a resource center where teachers can checkout materials to use with their classes.
The Evo Coding Robots and Dash Robots encourage the understanding of computer science through robotics, coding, and other STEM activities and can be used by kindergarten to fourth grade students.
This project will also stretch across all the content areas and impact over 400 students annually. The older students will document their learning experiences and create instructional videos that the younger students will watch and learn from. The older students will not only develop STEM skills but will also grow as leaders and their ability to communicate effectively to different audiences through technology. The younger students will have a direct connection to the older students in our learning community and know that one day they will take on those leadership roles and pass their knowledge onto future students.
This project will not only engage students in critical thinking, innovation, collaboration, risk taking, and communication, it will also help students develop self-awareness, initiative, and personal responsibility. But the most important and indirect purpose of this project is it will involve our whole learning community.
