As a school social worker, my students often draw or paint to express their feelings and or distract them from talking about difficult topics. The various size markers and paints will give them a creative space to do that processing. I find in my work with elementary aged children that talking can be intimidating for some and that using the different mediums can assist the students find their voice in a non threatening way.
The students in this school come from a very diverse background with a large number of students being homeless at any given time. Many of the students are coming from trauma backgrounds and teaching them calming strategies is being done school wide. The putty will be used as a calming strategy when students are triggered by something in their day that may cause them stress. We teach the students different strategies and create calming corners in their classrooms as well as in my social work office to help them regulate their emotions. The putty and art supplies would benefit those students in need of calming strategies.
I also see groups of students to work on social skills and it has been helpful for them to come together and work on projects that they can connect on and feel included with each other. The string for friendship bracelets will be used for those groups to help them feel connected to each other and know that they have friends they can turn to when needed.
