It would be ideal for me to have my own kidney shaped table, in my classroom when instructing small groups of students. There are several benefits to the shape of this table, when working with small groups of students.
Kidney shaped tables allow teachers to sit closer to multiple students at one time for small group instruction and also to provide individual feedback. Another advantage of being close to the students is that the teacher can assess their understanding while observing them work. This type of arrangement reduces distractions for students because the teacher does not move around the room to help students when they have questions. She/he is available and ready to support, instruct, or observe as needed.
A kidney shaped table, to me, seems like a basic piece of classroom furniture which every teacher should have access to when working with small groups of students. Due to my specialist role, I have found that some furniture items such as this, can be hard to come by.
