My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given their own materials.
Allowing students their own materials creates more time on task and less management issues. Students use colored pencils when separating equations and expressions. They also use a different color when using order of operations.
Materials as simple as crayons and their own pair of scissors make students more likely to take ownership in their learning projects. Some projects and centers need to be colored or glued after they have been cut out. One example is students are creating city on grid paper to determine surface area.
