All students do not learn at the same time and in the same way. Many of our special needs children are consistently labeled as being too hyperactive, too "all over the place," and too much to handle. They are a burden to many teachers and many schoolmates. What do we think? These are some of the brightest, neatest, most creative, and most exciting students in the entire school! We love working with challenging behaviors! They may be the active ones in the classroom now, but we just see them as the future "movers and shakers" of our future! WE love watching them progress and succeed!
In an effort to meet the needs of our active students, we would like to use them as role models to "activate" our classroom with flexible seating. Currently, we only offer standard chairs and tables, with the occasional cushion as an option. Instead of celebrating and feeding the needs of our students, we are restricting and restraining their natural uniqueness. Through the use of wobble chairs at tables, students can move freely while showing strength in their abilities. At traditional seats, students can use bands to apply pressure to their legs and stimulate their bodies.
It is my goal to create a flexible seating rich classroom that celebrates the needs of all students. Please help me to be a role-model in my beliefs to encourage other teachers to follow my lead.
