Many students in this class are dual language learners, but are expected to read, write, and communicate in English. Small group work in the blocks center will encourage communication and collaboration, promoting the use of verbal communication to help children build English language proficiency.
Children learn best through hands-on, meaningful experiences with open-ended materials and social interaction. Children will learn concepts of spacial awareness, balance, gravity, and measurement while building structures with the blocks. Additionally, children will understand the roles of community helpers while using the career figures in their play. Last, the diverse figures will help children continue developing an understanding of diversity as they use the people with diverse abilities.
With these materials, children will be able to plan, design, and create structures that utilize creativity and critical thinking skills, while building English proficiency and meeting curricular goals.
