Second grade is a crucial year for literacy development! Our goal is to ensure that each second grader with special needs can read by the end of the school year. They enjoy looking at pictures in books which helps them learn the joys of reading. By the time students enter third grade, it is our hope they are able to approach a wide variety of texts with confidence and comprehension skills.
Evidence suggests that students learn best when they read books in their Zone of Proximal Development.
And the truth of the matter is, not all students come to second grade as fully independent readers. These leveled books will help me match each student with "just right" books, so they can continue to build their literacy skills every time they read.
