Getting students to read today can be very challenging. This novel specifically relates to everyone through a young boy's life with mystery, excitement, loss, and acceptance. I feel that given the world we live in today, it is imperative to explore more non-traditional literature, such as this novel, for students to regain their loss of reading if lost. I know of many adults that I have recommended this novel to and they adore it as much as I do. Another excellent teaching point of this novel is the way it is presented. This is not your standard 'word' novel. The way in which Selznick presents his story and in illustrations, or drawings, captures the reader to keep reading more until they have completed the novel. I have a personal copy in which I have read to my students in the past before, and they were completely amazed by it. I teach many different skills with this novel, which include but are not limited to, comparing and contrasting, cause and effect, inferencing, summarization, and history. Many do not truly know the history of Georges Méliès and of how cinematography all began. We will also discuss how it has changed in the decades and watch the movie by Martian Scorsese to compare and contrast the book to the movie. I would like to place this book in my students' hands to experience the novel/story in which Brian Selznick intended it to be; a one-on-one experience with the reader and the novel. I am requesting a small amount, however, it is so that we can share and due to the cost of the book since it is not available in paper pack. I currently have 27 students but will have them read in groups to experience this amazing novel for themselves.
