Many of the novels in our school are very out of date and do not clearly connect with out students lives. Being in a low soci-economic school district, many cannot connect with two parent home characters, or characters whose problems are not ones they face. Books will be used for book clubs, student choice reading, and whole class reading.
Students will be more engaged with characters like them: on the outskirts of gangs, one parent house holds, families and siblings that deal with eviction or substance abuse.
Stories that are more reflective of my student's lives will make them more likely to read and be able to connect to the characters.
