I teach 5th grade in Reno, NV at a 'low income, high needs' school. My students, in general, don't have excess to literature at home, which greatly affects their background knowledge in most content curriculum areas. It is hard to try to capture 'interest' with these kids that doesn't involve video games. BUT, I have found a strand that is extremely interesting to them.....American History! I love teaching history. When a teacher is excited about teaching a subject (which is rare these days with so much pressure to 'teach to the test'), the students pick up on that enthusiasm and are excited, as well. Luckily, our 5th grade reading and social studies series cross paths with the Revolutionary War. With so much exposure, my students LOVE learning about it! With the many activities I have for my students, the hardest to fulfill is the 3rd quarter book report on "History" (either fiction or non-fiction). I hardly have any books in my classroom library on this subject, I would like more.
