As part of a small, rural community our students have little access to the technologies of today that are going to be a way of life tomorrow. The items I selected to add to the Viking Makerspace will afford our students the opportunity to have some hands on experiences with the kinds of technologies that can shape their future career paths.
Our students need a 3-D printer to allow them to be part of designing the fine art of the future. A 3-D printer in the Makerspace will be used in a collaboration between the Library Media Specialist and the Art teacher to allow students to not just use technology but use it to create. The elements of making and the design process and the character traits that students develop such as perseverance and critical thinking throughout that creative process are key skill sets needed in future career paths. Having a broader view of the world through experiences like these will open the door to projects and career paths our students didn't even know existed.
