Students are grouped based on their reading ability. They move from their homeroom class to a class with students with similar needs. In order to make this transition easy, students are given a three-ring binder with a pencil pouch and folders in it to have everything they need in their "new" classroom. This makes it much easier for the student and the teacher to have everything they need to do their work.
Students carry their binder to a different classroom. Their materials stay organized and everyone has the same thing. The binders are used to store their work and also as a data binder to show the growth they have made. If a student needs to move up or down in a group, everything they need is in their binder when they go to a new room.
