Let's face it, literacy is the basic foundation of all subjects. Math word problems cannot be understood if a student does not have the tools to comprehend what the question is requiring them to solve. The science and social study branches of education require the ability to wade through mounds of research determining what is important to the task at hand. Comprehension skills are life skills in which every human being must competent in to be successful in our ever changing world.
Students who love to read, ACHIEVE! As ELA teachers, one of the challenges that we face is providing an understanding of a world that our students may never personally experience. Students are met with passages and questioning that require a broader background knowledge than most encompass. It also requires inference skills which entails using experience that most of our students have never experienced. Books can open the door for teachers to provide that “virtual” opportunity to enable students to dig deeper and get an understanding of issues around them. As a globally aware school, having books to provide stories from a different perspective allow students to make personal connections to those of different cultures and to overcome preconceived stereotypes.
Another challenge is making our students believe that they are capable of far more than they understand and encourage them to strive for the greatness they possess. Some of the books selected for purchase show main characters that are successful beyond normal expectations for that age. The characters overcome adversity and find a way to survive bleak situations. This is essential for students to be able to make that personal connection within their own lives.
Books are power within any classroom and if you ask any ELA teacher, you can never have enough!
