I have taught kindergarten for 12 years! Next year I get to begin a new chapter in my education career. I am moving to a fourth-grade position teaching reading and writing. This project will help me recreate the classroom environment that I currently have in my kindergarten class in my new fourth-grade classroom next year. This year I provided flexible seating for my kinders and it worked wonders!! However, everything I purchased for them is too small to move up and use in a fourth-grade classroom. If I am fully funded I will be purchasing a futon, some stability chairs, and a couple of beanbag chairs.
I believe in keeping the focus on what's important, which is my students. Outside our classroom is a fast paced ever changing world full of choices. How can I expect my students to solve problems and make choices independently if I consistently solve their problems and make choices for them?
The student choice benefit behind flexible seating is that it helps students become more self-aware of what times of seating and environment helps them learn best. And, of course, they are empowered by the opportunity to have a choice. The real kicker is when students are engaged, behavior issues are minimal and learning is happening!
Some of the immediate benefits of flexible seating include burning calories, using up excess energy, increased motivation and engagement, and creating a better flow of oxygen to the brain.
Imagine all of this happening along with creating and fostering a lifelong LOVE of learning!
