With a large classroom to use as a counseling office, I am able to provide plenty of space to my students for whole-class lessons, small groups, and individual meetings. We are able to cover a wide range of topics, such as conflict resolution skills, friendship, and mindfulness. As students gather in my room, we discuss and practice coping skills, anger management, emotional regulation, and identifying feelings. It is heartwarming to see these students gain greater insight into who they are as individuals, as well as develop empathy for those around them.
I strive to make my counseling office a safe and welcoming place for students to express themselves and learn important social and emotional skills. Currently, however, the only place to sit is a small, threadbare rug that doesn't allow room for a large group of students. Without designated spaces to sit, my students get distracted by each other, invade each others' personal space, or find room elsewhere by sliding on the smooth floor. These distractions prevent students from becoming fully engaged in the lesson, thus missing valuable information and skills.
With the feelings rug added to my office, students will have a designated space to sit as they enter for a classroom lesson. They will be able to organize themselves in a more streamlined fashion, with plenty of personal space, which will allow us to use our time together more efficiently. Additionally, this rug will be a great tool for working with small groups and individual students, as feelings identification is a vital part of the counseling work we do. A fun, inviting, and useful classroom rug such as this will serve to enhance the counseling experience for each one of my students.
