I am asking for 25 copies of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and "Of Mice and Men" in both Spanish and English. I would like to open up the world of reading to my students through accessible, yet deep literature. Though they are freshmen, most of my students read around a 4th-5th grade level. I feel that the books I have chosen will allow my students to experience, for the first time, what it means to read for pleasure. Why Harry Potter? We will begin our year with HP because of its authentic accessibility, cultural influence, and even opportunities to study etymology. My students have very few positive memories with reading and I feel that introducing their freshman year with a fun and accessible book can provide them with a positive connotation to literature. Why Of Mice and Men? We will read this during our second semester, after solid relationships with books have been established. OMaM's reading level is accessible to my students but has heavy themes and content. This gives them plenty of opportunity to express themselves through discussion, writing, and further research while also not being over their heads.
