When students get to high school, the learning environment can get to be very stoic. The chairs and desks are all the same, lined up in rows or occasionally small groups. The students all sit in the same uncomfortable seat facing the same direction and listen to a lecture while taking notes.
If the environment in which students work is comfortable and flexible, it allows students to work collaboratively and productively. In order to facilitate a classroom that supports these needs for students, I have already purchased a coffee table and bar table and some cushions for floor seating as well as some dorm-style seats. I will be moving into a new classroom that will have desks that adjust to be sitting or standing. I want to offer students the opportunity to work in a position that suits their needs. I want students to have options to stand, sit on the floor, or sit at a traditional desk, but with less traditional and more comfortable seating.
I want my classroom to be student-centered. I want it to be OUR space, where we are all comfortable and collaborating rather than MY space, where they sit still and watch me lecture.
