In a world language classroom, COMMUNICATION is the key word! Traditional desks can make students territorial or possessive over their space but flexible seating favors collaboration because it allows students to quickly and easily pair up, work in small groups, or discuss as a whole class.
Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment.
Flexible seating encourages students to find their best spot to stay calm, focused and productive. It gives students more control and improves student engagement. Nevertheless, it also requires higher-order thinking skills, like problem-solving, and emotional skills, such as conflict resolution.
