The Number Talks book is designed to develop a students number sense. The book give examples and strategies the students are able to use to solve math mentally. The chart paper and markers are used to record strategies the students come up with themselves to refer back to throughout the year.
Number Talks are so much fun for the students. When they find a solution to their problem mentally they are able to share out and explain how the found the answer. This gives each student the ability to teach one another. The best part is they are allowed to be different. It teaches them that each student's brain works differently. They have the opportunity to discuss what is right and what can go wrong. They are able to help one another and collaborate. They become teachers!
